An elderly woman has been decapitated after plunging from the 28th floor of a New York apartment block.

Witnesses to the horrific incident have revealed the 80-year-old was found on the floor with her head and arm cut off of her body. Those who saw the terrifying fall believe it was a balcony edge that caused the horrific decapitation, with others saying they saw the body in the street.

One shocked resident said: "I pulled up just as she was laying there, she had no head. The head and the arm were clean cut off on the other side, they ended up on the terrace."

The unnamed woman is said to have plunged off the 28th floor of the Regis Apartments at around 3.30pm on Saturday, October 12, police say.

Her clothes were found stuck on a fence near the bottom of the building, which was described by residents as badly bent from the impact. Another person who saw the horror incident, an unnamed 23-year-old, said: "Everyone started rushing towards the body but she was gone. Her body landed there but her head and leg hit the fence there, you can see it’s bent, there were clothes and blood stuck there."

Witnesses say the body became entangled on something on the side of the tower, which has numerous balconies, and landed on the ground decapitated.

Officers cordoned off the luxury apartment block with blue tape and several police vehicles were spotted around the scene. The woman who fell from the 28th floor was covered with a white cloth before being taken away by emergency services.

The New York Police Department are still investigating the possible motive behind the woman's plunge. The victim's name has also not been released.
