Man suffers serious injuries in attack near Garda station in Cork as investigation launched

A forensic and technical examination of the scene is being carried out. Gardai will also harvest CCTV footage from the vicinity

Gardai in Cork have launched an investigation following an assault in Mayfield on the northside of the city this afternoon which has led to the hospitalisation of a man with serious injuries.

The man was attacked on Colmcille Avenue, between the Old Youghal Road and Middle Glanmire Road, at around 4pm today.

The assault took place near a bus stop which is located a short distance away from the local Garda station. The man sustained serious head injuries in the incident.

The middle-aged man was taken by ambulance to CUH where his condition is described as serious.

A forensic and technical examination of the scene is being carried out. Gardai will also harvest CCTV footage from the vicinity.

A Garda spokesperson said an investigation into the incident was now underway.

The spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating an alleged assault which occurred in Mayfield, Cork at approximately 4pm on Wednesday (October 2).

"A male was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment. Enquiries are ongoing."

Gardaí have issued an appeal to motorists who were travelling in the area at the time and whose cars have dash cameras to contact them if they have footage which may be of assistance to the investigation.
