Man arrested on suspicion of money laundering as gardaí seize drugs worth €100,000 in Tipperary

A man aged in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of money-laundering offences after gardaí seized around €100,000 worth of cocaine and cannabis during a raid in Tipperary.

The suspect was taken into custody after gardaí stopped his car on the M8 near Thurles around 9pm on Tuesday. They discovered more than €27,000 in cash concealed in the vehicle.

Electronic devices and a small quantity of suspected cocaine were seized, and a follow-up search was carried out at a residence in Tipperary town later that night, during which gardaí found €70,000 worth of suspected cocaine and €30,000 worth of suspected cannabis.

A significant volume of drugs paraphernalia was also discovered, and a car was seized in Limerick the following day in connection with the money-laundering investigation.

The man who was arrested is expected to appear before Nenagh District Court later this morning.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said he had been arrested on suspicion of offences contrary to Section 7 of the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2010.

“Gardaí in the Tipperary Division arrested a man on suspicion of money laundering offences and seized approximately €100,000 cocaine and cannabis in a search on Tuesday evening, 10th December 2024,” they said.

“Gardaí stopped a vehicle on the M8 near Thurles shortly before 9:00pm on Tuesday, 10th December 2024. In the course of a search, over €27,000 in cash was discovered concealed in the vehicle. Electronic items were seized alongside a small quantity of cocaine.

“The driver of the vehicle, a male in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of offences contrary to Section 7 of the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering & Terrorist Financing) Act 2010 and detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in Co. Tipperary.

“In a follow-up search of a residence in Tipperary town later that evening, Gardaí seized €70,000 of suspected cocaine and €30,000 of suspected cannabis. A significant amount of drugs paraphernalia was also seized.

“On Wednesday 11th December 2024, investigating Gardaí seized a car in Limerick in connection with the money laundering investigation,” added the spokesperson.
