Brothers to stand trial for allegedly falsely imprisoning man at Indian restaurant in Donegal

Two brothers are to stand trial for allegedly falsely imprisoning another man at an Indian takeaway in Co Donegal.

Books of evidence were served on Prabhjot Singh and Bhupinder Singh when they appeared at separate sittings of Letterkenny District Court.

Prabhjot Singh also faces a charge of assault causing harm while Bhupinder Singh has been charged with assault causing harm to two men.

Both men have an address at Whitethorn Close in Letterkenny and have been returned for trial to Letterkenny Circuit Court, the next sitting of which begins on October 29.

Bhupinder Singh, a 37-year-old, is charged with three alleged offences at the restaurant which is located at Lower Main Street, Letterkenny.

He is charged that he falsely imprisoned Thomas Sweeney, the charge being contrary to section 15 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

He is also charged with assault causing harm to two men, Thomas Sweeney and Ciaran Hunter, the charges being contrary to section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.

Garda Gillian Page told Judge Eiteain Cunningham that she served the book of evidence.

At a previous sitting of Letterkenny District Court, a book of evidence was served on Prabhjot Singh, a 36-year-old.

Garda Pauline Doherty gave evidence of serving the book of evidence on the accused men.

He is charged with the false imprisonment of Thomas Sweeney at Taste of India, Lower Main Street, Letterkenny on May 20, 2022.

He is also charged with assault causing harm to Thomas Sweeney on the same date at the same location.

In both cases, Sergeant Jim Collins said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has consented for the matter to be sent forward for trial to the next sitting of the Circuit Court.

Solicitor Mr Rory O’Brien represents both accused, who were given the alibi warning by Judge Cunningham and the case was adjourned to Letterkenny Circuit Court.
