Gardai believe the bodies of a couple missing for nearly a decade will never be found.

Detectives suspect Willie Maughan and his lover Anastasija ‘Ana’ Varslavane were disposed of in a fire soon after they died.

One source said: “The chances of us ever finding their remains are slim and nil. We believe the killer went to great lengths to get rid of their bodies so they would deliberately never be found again. It is extremely hard on their families but this is what we suspect happened.

“A handful of people knew exactly what happened and how they died but won’t open their mouths.”

Earlier this week, gardai wrapped up a second search for their remains at Balrothery, Balbriggan, Co Dublin, after nothing was found.

A similar hunt at a large quarry in Drogheda a few years ago also failed to recover any bodies.

Gardai blame former gangster Cornelius Price, who died in February 2023, and his cohorts for the double murder. The Garda source added; “We suspect their bodies were burned shortly after they were killed and the ashes poured around the compound.

“We searched his premises a number of times and found nothing.”

The land searched last week in Balrothery was also owned by Price.
