A gang member has been arrested after a police car was crashed into during a chase in west Auckland on Wednesday night.

Police say a stolen car was seen on Titirangi Road and was pulled over by officers.

Inspector Kelly Farrant said the driver reversed into the police car causing some minor damage, before speeding off towards Avondale.

No police were injured, she said.

The Police Eagle helicopter was deployed and quickly spotted the vehicle, she said.

"Eagle spotted the vehicle travelling at high speed through Kelston, and relayed its position to ground units as it entered the Northwestern Motorway at Massey and headed towards the city," Farrant said in a statement.

"Spikes were successfully deployed in the Avondale area, but the vehicle continued on rims through the Waterview Tunnel, eventually exiting and smashed through the gate of a school in Mount Roskill."

She said a patched Head Hunter was arrested and a loaded crossbow was found in the car.

The man will appear in Waitākere District Court on Thursday charged with assault, reckless driving and failing to stop for police.
