AMD unveils new AI chipset to rival Nvidia and Intel, will be available across Ryzen, Instinct and Epyc lineup

After Intel and Nvidia announced their AI chips, AMD CEO Lisa Su unveiled its own AI-infused chipsets at an event in San Francisco.

At an event in San Francisco, AMD CEO Lisa Su announced new AI-integrated chipsets, which will be available across the company’s Ryzen, Instinct, and Epyc lineup. The launch event comes at the same time Intel announced its Arrow Lake AI chips. AMD’s rival Nvidia also announced its Blackwell AI chips earlier this year. At the event, AMD CEO subtly alluded to competitors like Nvidia and Intel highlighting its commitment to deliver open and accessible tech for a broad range of users, while steering clear of locking customers into exclusive, proprietary systems.

AMD launched the new Ryzen AI Pro 300 Series processors that feature the latest Zen 5 and XDNA 2 architectures. These processors are already powering the first Microsoft Copilot+ laptops designed for the enterprise. AMD claims top-tier performance, exceptional battery life, and enhanced security features with the new chipset. The Ryzen AI PRO 300 Series, including the flagship Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 375 processor, is designed to handle local AI tasks with AI performance boasting an impressive 55 NPU TOPS.

With major OEM partners like HP and Lenovo rolling out new commercial PCs powered by Ryzen AI PRO processors, more than 100 platforms are expected to hit the market by 2025.

AMD also launched the Instinct MI325X accelerators. Designed to handle the demanding AI workloads, these accelerators boast advanced memory capabilities. AMD says its new Instinct MI325X will go into production later this year. The chip will start shipping in the first quarter of 2025, according to a Reuters report. Company CEO Lisa Su also spoke about its next-generation chipset –– MI350 series –– which she says will be released in the second half of 2025. The MI400 series is planned for 2026. Su claims the new MI325X and MI350 series will feature an increased amount of memory and will use a new architecture that will improve performance significantly over the older MI300X and MI250X chips.

AMD's MI325X chip is built on the same architecture as the MI300X, which was introduced last year. As AMD continues to develop next-generation AI chips, it is expected to increase competitive pressure on Intel, which has faced challenges in establishing a cohesive AI chip strategy. In June, Su mentioned that AMD, like competitor Nvidia, is now rolling out new product families annually. The MI300X accelerators, launched in December, are already being used by top AI models from companies like OpenAI and Meta.

AMD also announced the Epyc 9005 series processors that are built on the new Zen 5 architecture. AMD partners like Dell, HPE, Lenovo, and Supermicro, announced early adoption of these CPUs.
