In response to the ongoing heatwave, all government and private schools in Assam's Kamrup district, including Guwahati, have been ordered to close from September 24 to September 27, 2024. The decision aims to protect students from the harmful effects of extreme heat and ensure their well-being.

The Kamrup district administration issued this order after reports emerged of students falling ill or fainting due to dehydration and heat exposure. As a result, schools are expected to reopen on September 30, 2024.

An official notification stated, "After receiving reports from school heads about incidents of students experiencing health issues due to excessive heat, and with the approval of the District Commissioner, it has been decided that all government, provincialised, and private schools in Kamrup Metro will remain closed from September 24 to September 27 due to rising temperatures."

This month, Guwahati recorded a high of 38 degrees Celsius, nearing its record of 38.2 degrees, set in September 2023. Since 2014, extreme heat conditions in the region have been increasingly common in September.

Before the closure, the Kamrup administration had already adjusted school timings, with both state and central government schools operating from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm, to minimise exposure during peak heat hours.

Outdoor activities like school assemblies were also moved indoors. Students are advised to stay updated with their respective schools regarding any further changes to the holiday schedule.
