CBSE mandates 75% attendance for Class 10, 12 exams in 2025

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made 75 percent attendance mandatory for Class 10 and 12 students to be eligible for the 2025 board exams. Schools are required to strictly enforce this rule and notify parents and students about its importance and potential consequences for non-compliance.

The exam conducting body, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued an official notification to principals and heads of CBSE-affiliated schools, emphasising the strict enforcement of the 75 percent attendance rule for Class 10 and 12 students appearing in the 2025 board examinations.

The directive reinforces the adherence to Rules 13 and 14 of the CBSE Examination Bye-Laws, highlighting the importance of student attendance.

According to the Board’s guidelines, students must maintain at least 75 percent attendance to be eligible for the board exams. Exceptions, however, may be made in certain situations such as medical emergencies, participation in national or international sports events, or other significant reasons, provided valid documentation is submitted to the Board. In such cases, students may receive up to a 25 percent attendance relaxation.

Schools have been instructed to inform both students and parents about the compulsory attendance rule and the consequences of non-compliance.

The CBSE also warned that during surprise inspections, any school found to have students absent without proper leave documentation will be presumed as not ensuring regular attendance. Such students could be barred from taking the board exams.

Once attendance records are submitted to CBSE, no revisions will be allowed, and attendance will be calculated up to January 1st of the academic session. The Board has also issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for handling attendance shortages, along with a Proforma for schools to use when submitting cases for condonation.
