Grocery shop set to become new Indian takeaway

A grocery shop could be reborn as a takeaway under new plans recently submitted. Each week Bristol City Council receives dozens of planning applications seeking permission for a whole range of developments.

Over the past seven days, those applications also included converting a community centre into a launderette and revamping staff rooms at Temple Meads. Here’s this week’s round-up of notable planning applications submitted to the council.

Every week dozens are validated by the local authority and we have selected some of the more interesting proposals. All planning applications submitted to the council have to be validated and are available for inspection by the public. Anyone is also allowed to submit comments about the applications — whether in support or objection.

The majority of applications are decided by planning officers at the council under delegated powers. However, some will go before elected councillors who sit on planning committees. No dates have been set for when the planning applications below will be determined. They can be viewed by going to the planning portal on Bristol City Council’s website.

Grocery shop to become takeaway

A grocery shop could become a takeaway. The vacant shop, on the corner of a rank of shops on Avonvale Road in Barton Hill, would serve Indian food from 11am until 11pm, similar hours to the existing shops there.

Planning documents said: “There is no existing hot takeaway in this location, although there is a café open in the day. The food provided is Indian, which will give another variety of food in the area.”

Refurbish staff rooms at Temple Meads

Staff rooms at Temple Meads train station could be refurbished. The rooms between platforms five and seven would be redecorated, and a kitchenette, toilets and shower room would be replaced with new ones. The station is Grade-I listed and managed by Network Rail, but the application has been made by Great Western Railway, who operate most of the services.

In planning documents, architects said: “The refurbishment aims to provide improved welfare facilities for the station staff. This will include enhancing the existing space to create a more
comfortable and functional working environment, ensuring that the staff have access to adequate facilities while maintaining the historical integrity of the station’s layout.”

Muslim community centre becoming a laundrette

A Muslim community centre in Horfield could become a laundrette. The Shahporan Cultural and Community Centre on Filton Avenue has been left empty for five years, according to planning documents. The landlord received complaints from neighbours due to noise late at night, “particularly when the call to prayer was transmitted from a loudspeaker”.

Former plans for the building were for a takeaway, but this application has been withdrawn. A clothes shop also approached the owner, but then “decided against the location”.

Dentists expanding

A dental centre in Hillfields could soon expand. The Lodge Causeway Dental Centre, on Lodge Causeway, is applying for planning permission to convert a flat above the centre into two additional surgery rooms. The conversion work has already begun.
