A beloved property best known as the 'Donkey House' in Burton Joyce has gone on the market. The Victorian home is around 150 years old and its current owners have spent the last two years restoring the property and some of its original features.

The five-bedroom home on Lee Road has been put on the market by Alasdair Morrison & Mundys with a guide price of £995,000. It has two bathrooms, three reception rooms and two outbuildings.

This detached house is known as the "donkey house" after the previous owner kept his donkeys there for years and people would stop by to see and feed them. On Saturday, June 14, 2014 there was even a Donkey day at the property, where families gathered on the site for a day of fun to raise money for various donkey-related charities.

The current owner, Nicola Huthwaite, explained: "There were donkeys living there before we moved in for years and years.

"People came to feed and see the donkeys. It was the person who lived here before us, he used to keep his donkeys on the land." Nicola, who is an interior influencer, lives at the property with her husband and their four children, and has spent a lot of time carefully renovating and decorating it to restore its charm.

The 35-year-old explained: "We have lived in the property for the last two years and renovated it over a year which is now all complete. The previous owner had it all of his life and it was abandoned for two years which is when we bought it.

"It needed so much work doing to it. We came in and did everything to it and restored all of the old features." Some of this work included exposing some of the high ceilings that had been hidden and reinstalling covings.

This was the pair's first time renovating a property, and although they did a lot of things themselves they did also need some help from professional builders. Nicola added: "This was our first time renovating. It was massive, and a big thing for us doing it up.

"We spent around £150,000 to get it to the standard it is now." Now completely transformed to how it was just a few years ago, the house has even been featured in the English Homes magazine.

Speaking about the home, Nicola added: "It's a really nice place to live. It has so much character and it's really bright and really pretty.

"We have the Wisteria growing in spring which is one of my favourite things and it just reminds me of the old times really, like the original floorboards that have been exposed are amazing and the original fireplace as well. We absolutely love living there and it will be a sad day to go."

The property is also just 0.6 miles away from the train station in Burton Joyce, and less than three miles away from the stations in Carlton, Lowdham and Netherfield. The home is also 0.3 miles away from its closest primary school, which makes it a great location for families.
