'Debilitating' Hucknall roadworks by upcoming housing development to finish weeks early

Roadworks that have been "debilitating" Hucknall are set to finish weeks earlier than expected after an agreement with contractors. Watnall Road was set to be shut until December 20 whilst the road and footpath was reconstructed.

The work was being carried out by contractors on behalf of HarperCrewe developments, which is planning to build 81 homes off Watnall Road. The development will be based on part of the land that once housed Hucknall Town FC's ground, with the club having since moved to a site on Aerial Way.

Drivers are said to have been "up in arms" over the roadworks, which have seen Watnall Road shut between its junction with the A611 bypass and its junction with Nabbs Lane. Local councillors have now confirmed that the road is set to fully reopen by December 7, two weeks earlier than the amended completion date of December 20.

Councillor Dave Shaw, who represents Hucknall West on Ashfield District Council, said: "We'd like to thank the contractors who have listened to our pleas and will complete the work ahead of their amended timetable... These works, whilst essential, have had a debilitating impact on Hucknall and the fact that work will be completed in just a few weeks will be welcomed with open arms across our town."

Councillor Shaw, along with fellow Hucknall councillors Lee Waters and John Wilmott, held a meeting about the issues caused by the roadworks last month and the number of contractors on the site is said to have since doubled. Councillor Waters added: "Residents have been up in arms over the roadworks and the impact on their daily lives. That's why we took their concerns straight to the top...

"The fact [the work] will be done well before is excellent news. Once again, working with residents we have delivered a positive outcome after months of pain."
