White bedding can often appear dull after a wash, particularly if mixed with darker laundry items. Over time, bed sheets can develop a yellowish tint due to contact with body oils and sweat.

Regular use of lotions and cosmetics can also contribute to this discolouration. While white vinegar can help to "brighten" your white bedding, the experts at Nectar Sleep Mattresses have identified another natural cleaner as the top method.

They suggest that lemon is the best thing to use as it's a "natural bleaching agent" due to the "powerful presence of citric acid". When used correctly, they said: "It can brighten and make your sheets white again."

Another benefit of using lemon juice is that it leaves a pleasant citrus scent. There are two ways to brighten your sheets with lemon juice. The first involves taking the juice of one lemon and adding it to the washing machine with your regular detergent and washing as usual, reports the Express.

The second method requires you to mix half a cup of lemon juice with four litres of hot water and soak your white sheets in the water. Soak the sheets for at least 30 minutes to an hour, or you can do it overnight.

Afterwards, simply put your sheets into the machine and wash them on a regular cycle. While the first method works for all bed sheets, the second method is not suitable for silk.

Although chlorine bleach is often used to brighten bedding, it may not be the best solution. The interaction of chlorine with residual body oils on your sheets could lead to damaging yellow stains. If you still wish to use bleach, first wash your sheets in the washing machine as usual, then add the bleach during the second wash cycle.
