Nottingham drivers warned of changes as work on 'outdated' roundabout moves forward

Drivers have been told to take note of diversions

Nottingham drivers have been warned over a raft of changes to an 'outdated' city junction that is being transformed. Nottingham City Council has been replacing the layout of the Maid Marian Way roundabout with a traffic light-controlled T-junction that will feature new pedestrian crossings and improved cycle facilities.

City council officials have now explained that work to completely remove the roundabout, which started back in May, is progressing well. However, this progress has led to changes that will impact the large number of drivers who use the busy city centre junction.

Night works are taking place between 10pm – 6am from Monday, September 23, to Thursday, September 26. During this time drivers will be unable to approach from Upper Parliament Street and turn right onto Derby Road, with a diversion taking motorists via Maid Marian Way and Peveril Drive.

The second phase of the works will be in place on Monday, September 30, from 10pm - 6am and will mean that drivers are unable to approach from Tollhouse Hill and go straight onto Maid Marian Way. There will be a diversion via Upper Parliament Street, looping around via Shakespeare Street, North Church Street and Burton Street to return to Upper Parliament Street and turn left onto Maid Marian Way.

The third phase, which will occur between 10pm - 6am on Tuesday, October 1, will leave drivers unable to approach from Maid Marian Way and turn right onto Upper Parliament Street. There will be a diversion via Derby Road, Canning Circus and returning down Tollhouse Hill to turn left onto Upper Parliament Street.

Drivers will be unable to approach from Tollhouse Hill and go straight onto Maid Marian Way between 10pm - 6am on Wednesday, October 2, as part of the fourth stage of works. There will be a diversion via Upper Parliament Street, looping around via Shakespeare Street, North Church Street and Burton Street to return to Upper Parliament Street and turn left onto Maid Marian Way.

From Sunday, October 6, the former roundabout will become a T-junction operated under temporary traffic lights and all movements will be possible. Southbound traffic will be able to turn right on Mount Street, while northbound traffic will be able to turn left on Park Row, and motorists will be able to turn left from Tollhouse Hill onto Derby Road using a new dedicated route.

Council officials have explained the changes to the roundabout, which had been called polluted and outdated by councillors, would make it safer and more appealing. The project is funded through the Government's Future High Street Fund.
