Concern as police stop searching for dog after 'savage' attack on Nottingham man
by Joel Moore · NottinghamshireLivePolice have stopped searching for a dog which savagely attacked a man as he walked through a Nottingham park. Ian Douglas' arm was ravaged through to the bone during the "traumatic" mauling at the Mounts, off Edale Road in Sneinton, on October 24.
The 64-year-old said he only survived due to the last-minute intervention of the owner of the dog, which is believed to be a bully or boxer type. Nottinghamshire Police began searching for he animal and its owner but have since closed the investigation, citing a lack of CCTV and witnesses.
However the force said they would investigate any new information and have "plenty of time to do so". Mr Douglas, who underwent surgery after the attack, said he is "very worried" that the dog is still out there.
"I'm concerned that there's a very dangerous dog at large and therefore this could happen to a child or an older person," said the author. "I'm concerned it's going to happen to someone more vulnerable than me.
"It's very worrying for me knowing how savage it was. The threat is still out there and I want to make people in the Sneinton area aware of that, particularly around the Mounts area."
Mr Douglas said he understood the decision by police. "Police wanted to do something but they haven't been able to.
"That's their decision and they know much more than I do." Issuing a message to people who live in the area, he added: "Be careful and keep an eye on your children.
"If you see a dog that's very concerning please let the police know." Sergeant Ash Small, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Officers have carried out an investigation into the incident which has involved extra patrols in the area to trace a suspect, other local inquiries and media coverage.
“Unfortunately, we do not believe the incident was captured on CCTV or any other footage and no similar incidents have been reported to us in this area. We know the victim has suffered some nasty injuries and it remains really important that anyone with any information gets in touch with police.
“I want to make it clear that if any new information becomes available we will investigate further."
