New police powers brought in after fireworks shot into flats in Nottingham

Police have issued another dispersal order in a Nottingham area where young people shot fireworks at each other and the emergency services. Nottinghamshire Police sent officers to student-dominated Midland Way in Radford after crowds launched rockets at each other, buildings and cars, on Bonfire Night.

TikTok videos taken by University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University students showed fireworks being shot into flats through windows as different groups of 'firework war' participants ran away and towards each other. Multiple police units were deployed to the incident, with fireworks then aimed at officers and firefighters at the scene.

In an attempt to prevent further disorder Nottinghamshire Police has now reissued an earlier dispersal order that gives officers extra powers to approach suspects and remove them from the area. The order covers the area around Midland Way and St Peters Street and can be re-imposed at any time.

Officers will also be on hand to break up groups who are perceived as causing or likely to cause nuisance, police said. Inspector Liz Gaskin, of the City Central neighbourhood policing team, which is based at Radford Road Police Station, said: “We have introduced this order to prevent potential disorder following incidents earlier this week.

"Patrols have been increased in the area to deal with any issues, and this dispersal zone gives officers on the ground extra powers to approach people they believe could be there to commit anti-social behaviour or disorder. This order is aimed at ensuring law-abiding people are not subjected to any such behaviour, and I ask that people continue reporting any concerns and we will take action.

"If you witness any anti-social behaviour or criminal behaviour, or have any information about such incidents, please contact or speak to our officers and we will take action.” The force previously said it would work to track down those who had been involved in the Bonfire Night incident.
