Two men have been arrested after a man in his eighties fell victim to a distraction burglary. The individuals reportedly helped themselves to items in the man's home in Wollaton after they talked their way into the pensioner's home.

The first time they were invited into the property, one of the guests distracted the man while the other rifled through his belongings. They left the address and then returned a short while later intending to steal from the victim again.

During the visits, which happened around 6.30am on September 13, a watch and some quantities of cash were stolen from the man. The victim discovered the items had gone missing soon after, but it was not until September 15 that Nottinghamshire Police were notified.

Detective Inspector Julian Eminson-Ferry of Nottinghamshire Police said: “The people involved in this incident went out of their way to knowingly deceive a vulnerable man. After talking their way into his home, they then made a conscious effort to distract him so they could steal his belongings.

“This was a despicable crime and we’re determined to do whatever we can to bring those responsible to justice. While we’ve arrested two suspects in connection with this offence, our inquiries are still very much ongoing as we try to get to the bottom of what happened."

The force identified a suspect, who they brought into custody on Tuesday, October 8. The 18-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A second suspect, also an 18-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of the same offence on Sunday, October 13. Both of the suspects have been bailed with strict conditions to stay away from the road in question.

DI Julian Eminson-Ferry added: "We’d plead with anyone who has any information to please come forward so that we can act on it."

Anyone with information should report it to the police on 101, quoting incident 431 of 15 September 2024. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be called anonymously on 0800 555 111.
