Urgent 'do not eat' warning issued as mayonnaise and other condiments pulled from sale

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a stark "do not eat" warning after a number of mayonnaise and other condiment products have been pulled from sale

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a stern "do not eat" warning as several mayonnaise and other condiment products have been withdrawn from sale due to potential contamination. The FSA, along with health officials, local authorities, businesses and the wider industry, is currently investigating a number of food items suspected to be contaminated.

This follows numerous allergy warnings related to mustard ingredients sourced from Indian producer GT Agro Industries. Leicester-based firm FGS Ingredients, which had supplied these ingredients for use in UK food, announced on Saturday that it had conducted additional testing across its ingredients and did not find "any presence of peanut content or residue".

The FSA initially released a list of products to avoid, and added further items to this list on Monday evening, September 30, many of which were popular sauces and mayonnaise products. The latest guidance from the FSA states: "FGS Ingredients Ltd is recalling a number of products containing mustard powder because they may contain peanuts. This means these products are a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to peanuts. These products are sold under several different brand names at several different retail stores."

Peanut allergies can lead to severe and potentially fatal reactions. The NHS has outlined symptoms of a peanut allergy, which include skin reactions such as hives, redness and swelling, as well as digestive issues like diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting, reports Kent Live.

Other symptoms may include congestion, sneezing, itching, tearing up, or eye redness. More serious symptoms could involve the throat closing up and breathing difficulties.

A food allergy is when your immune system overreacts to specific foods, causing the body to react. The exact reasons for this reaction are not fully understood, but certain foods are known to trigger allergic responses more than others in some individuals.
