Dalbeattie High School has been awarded their Silver UNICEF UK Right Respecting School Award.
In order to achieve this, the Dalbeattie community worked together to gather evidence towards three main outcomes: teaching and learning about rights; teaching and learning through rights and being ambassadors for the rights of others.
The evidence submitted included: creating a new school vision, values and aims; designing a school charter; embedding pupil voice; daily breakfast club run by seniors; a range of extra-curricular opportunities; a variety of trips, celebration evenings, lessons and assemblies to name just a few.
A group of S1-S6 pupils met with assessors to share their experience of the journey, which started in September 2021. The assessors stated that the young people were “knowledgeable, mature, articulate and a lovely group to speak to”. The assessor felt it was a really positive experience.
Feedback from the assessors highlighted Dalbeattie as a school with good relationships, strong pupil voice and many positive experiences for all of the young people. The report that was submitted stated: “The school’s effort to ensure everyone feels included and valued was acknowledged by pupils and staff” and “pupils agreed that their views are listened to and considered, with lots of opportunities to be involved in leadership groups.”
Well done to all involved. The school will now be striving towards their Gold award.
