Drug-fuelled driver who filmed Snapchat video doing 100mph before paralysing woman in crash is jailed

Gavin Coull was jailed after driving his BMW dangerously leaving a 27-year-old woman with catastrophic injuries.

A Scots man who left a young woman paralysed in a drug-fuelled, high-speed car crash after he filmed himself on Snapchat hitting 100 mph has been jailed.

Gavin Coull, 32, from Fraserburgh, boasted that he was “burning the midnight oil” when he uploaded dashcam footage to Snapchat just moments before the collision.

The 50 second clip on social media showed a shaky video of his car’s speedometer as the needle climbed into excessive speeds and reaching 100 miles an hour on the major north-east road.

His BMW 318 struck a red Ford Fiesta from behind on the southbound lane of the A90 near Ellon, Aberdeenshire, at around 10.20pm on August 22 at the junction with the B9000 near Tipperty, which were travelling southbound leaving a 27-year-old female passenger paralysed from the neck down.

Police attended and tested Coull's blood showing traces of drugs in the horrific crash what also left the the driver of the Fiesta also suffered serious injuries.

He was sentenced to three years imprisonment at Aberdeen Sheriff Court today after a jury found him guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and of driving while unfit through drink or drugs .

Prosecutors said Coull's actions had deprived the victim of "the normal and rich life she was entitled to expect".

Alison McKenzie, Procurator Fiscal for Aberdeen, said: “This young woman suffered catastrophic injuries as a direct consequence of Gavin Coull’s dangerous driving.

“In a split second, she was deprived of the normal and rich life she was entitled to expect.

“Yet she showed enormous bravery and courage in harrowing circumstances to give evidence to the court.

“Hopefully, she and her family will gain some comfort from the fact that justice has been served and that the accused will now spend time in prison as a result of his crimes.”

The court heard how Coull and a fellow passenger were travelling southbound on the dual carriageway late on the evening of March 11, 2021.

Jurors were shown the dashcam footage Coull uploaded to Snapchat during the trial. The collision caused the Fiesta to smash through crash barriers and tumble onto a grassy embankment off the A90.
