British actor Rupert Everett has announced his intention to quit alcohol, expressing a desire for a "fresh brain". The 65 year old star, known for his roles in My Best Friend’s Wedding and St Trinian’s, is planning to embrace sobriety after years of drinking and drug use, according to The Sunday Times.

"The next thing I’m going to do is stop drinking", stated Everett, although he admitted uncertainty about how he would achieve this. He expressed the importance of lucidity as one ages, saying, "The world and life is so amazing."

He expressed regret for not realising this sooner.

Everett, who has been candid about his past substance abuse, including heroin, voiced concerns about his future health. He said: "The brain when you get older becomes very valuable to you."

He reflected on his past actions, saying, "And you suddenly think: ‘God, why did I put it through so much turmoil? ’."

He expressed regret, stating, "I think to have a lucid fresh brain like an iceberg lettuce would be wonderful."

During an appearance on the How To Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast earlier this month, Everett pondered the potential impact of his past drug use.

"I can’t lie and say I haven’t enjoyed lots of drugs", he confessed, but added, "What I do fear for is my own brain. And, as I get older, I’d like to keep it as long as possible."

He also noted that he could already feel his mental sharpness starting to fade.

Everett is also recognised for lending his voice to Prince Charming in Shrek 2 and Shrek The Third. More recently, he has starred in the TV series Emily In Paris and The Serpent Queen.
