Full access to fluent sign language in the region’s schools has moved a step forward.

A motion from councillors John Denerley and Emma Jordan calling for bilingual education to be introduced was unanimously approved at last Thursday’s full council meeting.

Dee and Glenkens representative Councillor Denerley, who is himself deaf, has previously been involved in making positive changes to the council’s British Sign Language (BSL) plan and also the introduction of interpreters during live council meetings.

He said: “This is good news for deaf children, ensuring they can access a full education in both English and BSL, which will empower them to succeed.

“Furthermore, I believe Dumfries and Galloway Council is committed to ensuring that all children, including those who are deaf, receive an education that empowers them to thrive. By advocating for bilingual education in both BSL and English, we are ensuring that deaf students have the tools they need for success, while also respecting and promoting their linguistic and cultural identities.”

The motion from Councillor Denerley and North West Dumfries representative Councillor Jordan stated that bilingual education reduces barriers to learning and participation that may exist in settings where only spoken languages are used.

Councillor Jordan added: “This motion will give our deaf community more opportunities to reach their potential and bring the deaf and hearing communities together by breaking down barriers between deaf and hearing people.”
