Teenage girl dies suddenly at Scots secondary school as community left devastated

A secondary school is in mourning following the sudden death of a pupil. The teenage girl was found in a toilet area at Jedburgh Grammar School in the Borders but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.

It is understood there are no suspicious circumstances regarding Tuesday's incident. The school - which has a roll of around 440 pupils - closed early for the day.

In a letter to parents, Scottish Borders Council's director of Education and Children's Services Lesley Munro said extra support was being provided for pupils and school events such as parents evenings planned for this week have been put on hold.

She wrote:" "Following the critical incident at the school (on Tuesday), we want to confirm that supports will be in place (on
Wednesday) to wrap around the school community at this difficult time.

"These supports will include education psychologists, trained officers, school staff and partners who will be available for as long as is needed.

"If you have any concerns about your child or children, please do not hesitate to contact school through their class or pastoral teacher or in whatever would be your normal way.

"As I’m sure you understand it is not appropriate to continue with planned events for now and parents evenings planned for this week will be scheduled for a later date."

Local councillor Scott Hamilton posted on social media that his "thoughts and prayers are with all those involved" - and that school staff and the local authority "will look to support all those affected".
