A teenager has been arrested over a knife attack on an elderly man and woman. The schoolboy was detained after the pair were stabbed inside a property.

A police cordon remains around the home in question and neighbouring properties, while officers try and establish exactly what happened.

The man, who is in his 70s, and the woman, who is in her 60s, were rushed to hospital this morning after the alarm was raised just before 7am.

The Mirror reports the emergency services were responding to reports of a disturbance at the property, on a residential street in Ashington, Northumberland.

Their condition is said to be stable. Officers arrested a 14-year-old schoolboy on suspicion of attempted murder and he is currently in custody at a nearby station.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said in a statement: "We were called to an incident at a private address in Northumberland this morning (1 November) shortly before 7am.
