Dumfries Station and its band of hard-working gardening volunteers have enjoyed double success in the annual ScotRail in the Community Awards.
They won Scotland’s Adopted Station of the Year title for the Dumfriesshire train station – for the second year running.
And then, at the ceremony in the voco Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow, they were also awarded Adopter(s) of the Year for their own magnificent efforts.
The group voluntarily looks after and maintains two gardens at Dumfries with a wide range of plantings – drawing delight from travellers who use the station.
Judges found that of all Scotland’s stations, the Dumfries Adoptive Railway Gardeners received praise from across their local community for their exceptional work “making it a welcoming environment for everyone who uses the station”.
The group of 10 goes above and beyond, working all year round to make the gardens as sustainable as possible – replacing annuals with perennials and encouraging wildlife to the gardens.
James Ledgerwood, ScotRail head of economic and community development, said: “The ScotRail in the Community Awards is one of the highlights of our calendar each year. Supporting our local communities and their projects is incredibly important, and these awards allow us to celebrate our volunteers and the work they do to support ScotRail in delivering services that go way beyond the railway.”
