Stirling’s roads are set to host a Christmas spectacular as more than 60 tractors line the tarmac for a special fundraiser in memory of a much-loved Gargunnock woman.
The festive ‘tractor run’ follows on from a similar event held on the roads around the region earlier this year, which raised more than £5,000 for Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland following the passing of former Arnprior blacksmith Bobby Gunn.
After the success of that event - which also attracted big crowds lining the streets to witness the special vehicles enjoy their big moment - the idea has now been extended to bring a slice of Christmas cheer.
The tractor run, set to take place on the evening of December 7, will see more than 60 tractors and articulated lorries driving a route which will begin and end at the United Auctions market in Stirling.
The route will also take in Causewayhead, Bridge of Allan, Dunblane and Doune before heading back to the market site on the outskirts of the city.
It has put together in memory of Gargunnock farmer Heather McAllister, who passed away tragically at the age of 38 on December 27 - with proceeds being donated to the Somerville Heart Foundation charity.
Organiser Bob Wilson, from Kippen, told the Observer: “The idea is to dress up our tractors in Christmas lights and do a wee run around the town.
“We have about 65 entries confirmed to being taking part - including some classic and modern models - and the plan is for it to be a nice feel-good thing for the community to come out and enjoy.
“The McAllisters are a big part of the local farming community and there has already been a lot of support for the run which has been great; we’re already sitting at £1,700 in entries and donations before the day has even arrived.
“We had no idea how much the previous run was going to make and it just ended up going mad and raised £6,000 so we thought about doing another one for a great cause.”
The tractor run is also being organised in association with the Royal Highland Education Trust, an organisation which aims to bring farming and its importance to life for young people from all backgrounds.
“The RHET have been heavily involved in helping us out with the tractor run and we’re trying to promote what they do as well - educating the young people about what farming is all about”, Bob continued.
“They are big in trying to promote the story of where the food at the Christmas table comes from and get more people interested.”
