Controlled explosion of 'suspicious item' at Buchanan Bus Station as three men arrested

A controlled explosion has been carried out at a major Scots bus station hours after a "potential suspicious item" was found in the city centre. Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow was cordoned off for several hours on Wednesday November 20 while bomb disposal experts assessed the situation.

Emergency crews raced to the scene at around 1.10pm after police received a report of a potential suspicious item at the bus station. Cops contacted the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) and a controlled explosion was carried out late on Wednesday night.

However, officers confirmed nothing suspicious was found. Three men had been arrested earlier in the day with Police Scotland later confirming this was in connection with possession of offensive weapons.

As a precaution due to the unknown nature of the device earlier on Wednesday, the bus station and surrounding buildings including Glasgow Caledonian University were evacuated. Police are now working to return the area back to normal tonight.

A section of the M8 motorway was also closed for a spell this evening and trains at Queen Street stopped while officers controlled the explosion at the bus station.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Three men have been arrested following an incident at Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow on Wednesday, 20 November, 2024. Around 1.10pm this afternoon, police received a report of a potential suspicious item at the bus station.

"Officers contacted the EOD and a controlled explosion was carried out. Nothing suspicious was found. As a precaution the bus station and surrounding buildings were evacuated.

"Three men were arrested in connection with possession of offensive weapons and enquiries are ongoing. Officers are working to return the area back to normal."

A ScotRail spokesperson said: "Services had stopped at Queen Street high level for a short period to allow the police to deal with the incident at Buchanan bus station but lines have reopened now."
