Brown, of Dumfries and Galloway, appeared at Dumfries Sheriff Court on Thursday to face a charge of murder. He also faced a charge of wilful fire-raising.

He made no plea during his private hearing, while the case against him was continued for prosecutors to investigate further.

No future court dates have been set, but he is expected to make a second court appearance in connection with the case next week and he was remanded in custody.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 6.55am on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, we were made aware of a fire at a property in Lady Street, Annan.

"Emergency services attended, and the fire was extinguished. The body of a man was found within and his family have been made aware. A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death, and enquiries are at an early stage. A joint investigation with the SFRS is ongoing."
