A volunteer-run Perth hospital radio service has received royal recognition.

CareSound Radio – the operational name of Hospital Radio Perth – has been broadcasting to Perth Royal Infirmary since 1989.

In recent years it has expanded, adding over 30 regional care homes to its schedule.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service recognises outstanding work of volunteer groups in supporting their communities.

CareSound Radio’s 40 volunteers source music requests and then broadcast them during dedicated programmes.

The station broadcasts 24 hours a day and has been awarded the accolade of UK Hospital Radio Station Of The Year four times.

CareSound Radio chairman, John Watson said: “I am delighted that our group’s efforts have been recognised, it is a tribute to the hard work and commitment of many, many volunteers over the last 35 years and to the support given to us by individuals, businesses, funding bodies and of course NHS Tayside.

“We must thank all those who nominated and supported us for this fantastic award.”

“Since covid, the organisation has bounced back stronger than ever, expanding the service and providing support to those doing great work in hospital and care homes in the region.”

The station has also provided commentary at every home St Johnstone game since 1990 and this service is relayed throughout the stadium by radio to elderly and sight impaired fans.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work of volunteer groups to support their communities.

Representatives of CareSound Radio will receive the award crystal and certificate from Stephen Leckie Esq, Lord-Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross later this year.

In addition, two volunteers from CareSound Radio will attend a garden party at Holyrood House in July.
