To commemorate a landmark event in British history, a unique set of coins was minted for the London 2012 Olympics.

A total of 29 distinct 50p designs were released to celebrate the prestigious games held in London. With the current buzz around rare coins, following news a rare penny scooped £127,000 at auction, it's essential to rummage through your coin collection.

The designs were selected from a national competition in 2009, which attracted thousands of entries. Now, a "valuable" football-themed 50p coin is causing a stir on TikTok after user @CoinCollectingWizard advised his 199,000 followers to keep an eye out for this particular piece.

In his video, he remarked: "Did you know there's a valuable football 50p coin you can find? All of the London Olympics 50p designs were chosen through a public competition in 2009 and out of 30,000 submissions, this design was chosen for the Offside Rule 50p."

He went onto describe the sought-after coin and said: "The Olympics Offside Rule can be found in your change. Almost 1.2 million coins dated 2011 were issued into circulation.

"The coin cleverly features a depiction of the offside rule in football, which might help those who find the concept baffling I'm joking, of course. But seriously, this coin does a great job at demystifying the rule."

He claimed finding one of these coins won't make you hit the jackpot, but you could still pocket £30 if it's in circulated condition and a "very nice" £20 in uncirculated. He asked: "Do you have this 50p or have you seen it in your change?"

Have you ever chanced upon this rare coin in your change? With approximately 1.2million of these coins in UK circulation, it shouldn't be too hard to stumble upon one and if you do, you could cash in for 60 times its face value.

The revelation went viral on TikTok, with the video racking up hundreds of likes and numerous comments. One user remarked: "I have one," while another boasted: "I've got two."
