The ANC has confirmed that they will support ActionSA mayoral candidate Dr Nasiphi Moya to become Tshwane's new mayor.

City of Tshwane is expected to elect a new mayor on Wednesday after former mayor Cillers Brink was removed through a motion of no confidence last month.

The ANC announced their support for Moya in a media briefing ahead of the process to elect a new mayor.

Hundred and twenty councillors voted for the motion while 87 voted against it.  IFP councilor Ziyanda Zwane was the only councilor who abstained.

The motion was tabled by ANC in Tshwane, accusing Brink of catering for only residents in the suburbs and neglecting the townships.

The ANC is expected to hold a media briefing ahead of the special council meeting.

“The press conference will be attended by all political parties that have committed to working together to reignite service delivery, advance community development and promote inclusive growth throughout the Capital City,” ANC said.

ANC at this stage has not announced their mayoral candidate. The party holds the majority of seats in council however, they need the support of other parties to elect their preferred candidate for mayoral position.

ActionSA, which also voted against the motion of no confidence, announced their mayoral candidate as Dr Nasiphi Moya-Tshwane, deputy mayor.

The party said that was one of the deals they put on the table when the party was negotiating with ANC to remove former mayor.

DA leader John Steenhuisen, in a video posted on X on Tuesday said Brink should be reinstated to bring stability to the city.

“We need to make sure that Cillers Brink is back as the mayor of Tshwane. This is the mayor who was working hard every single day for his residents, turning the municipality around, bringing good governance and keeping a coalition together and he was removed not for any reason of corruption, maladministration, nepotism, he was removed because he was doing good work for the people of Tshwane,” he said.
