Monrovia—Ambassador Sarah Safyn Fyneah, Liberia’s former representative to the United Nations, has formally declined an offer from President Joseph Boakai following her recall from the position.

In a letter addressed to the president, Amb. Fyneah acknowledged her receipt of the letter of recall dated August 14, 2024, which marked a culmination of a previous verbal communication regarding her position made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs on June 26, 2024.
Amb. Fyneah stated that her recall stemmed from her defense of diplomatic protocols concerning Liberia’s vote on December 12, 2023, asserting that Foreign Service Officers must align their actions with the nation’s official policies, as determined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Despite being offered a new role as Policy Advisor Council and Global Campaign Coordinator/Special Envoy for Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
Amb. Fyneah expressed her decision to decline the appointment after careful consideration, noting that she had submitted her resignation immediately following the minister’s initial communication.
In her letter, the Liberian diplomat insisted on her commitment to her role as Ambassador, emphasizing her leadership during Liberia’s campaign bid at the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
She described the challenges faced during her tenure, including unsuitable living conditions, and emphasized her hope for positive change with the election of President Boakai in 2023.
Amb. Fyneah, however, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under Boakai’s leadership, acknowledging the trust and confidence he placed in her during her eight months in office. She wished the president continued success in his leadership of Liberia.
