Three Smithfield residents charged in shooting incident

SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) — Three Smithfield residents were charged with firearms offenses after a shooting on Saturday afternoon.

At around 4 p.m., Smithfield Police were dispatched to the 700 block of Wrenn Road near Westside Elementary School in reference to a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital and has since been released. She was shot by another woman, identified as Keona Lawrence.

A preliminary investigation determined the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between four residents of two apartments. Witness statements and evidence suggest the altercation escalated when firearms were presented and discharged.

Search warrants executed on both apartments uncovered additional firearms, ammunition and evidence indicating shots were fired by all individuals during the incident.

Further investigation revealed residents Keona Lawrence and Iam Allah are convicted felons prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (18.2-308.2)
  • Brandishing a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school (18.2-282)
  • Discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school (18.2-280)
  • Malicious wounding (18.2-51)
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony (18.2-53.1)

Charges for Ricardo Woodard

  • Reckless handling of a firearm (18.2-56.1)

The victim faces no charges at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing.
