West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the government didn’t want any religion to be harmed. She said she had also spoken to the chief of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Kolkata.
But since the matter also concerned another country, “the Central government should take relevant action on this”. This is not the first time that the Chief Minister has claimed that her government will accept any decision taken by the Union government on external affairs issues. She said the same thing when the current crisis broke out in Bangladesh a few months back.
India noted with "deep concern" regarding the arrest of Das and he urged authorities in the neighbouring country to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all other minority groups.
This comes after ISKCON priest Chinmoy Das was taken into custody by Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Monday. Das was taken into custody by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 4:30 pm.
A Bangladeshi court on Tuesday denied bail to Das who was arrested on sedition charges and sent him to prison. This triggered massive protests by Hindus in various locations, including the capital Dhaka and the port city of Chittagong. Later, ISKCON Bangladesh also issued a list of demands to the government for subsequent violence and attacks against Sanatanis in various regions of Bangladesh.
On Wednesday night, the ISKCON Kolkata vice-president and spokesperson Radharaman Das informed that the ISKCON Namhatta centre in Shibchar Bangladesh has been forcefully closed down. The same day, Chief Priest of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Acharya Satyendra Das also condemned the petition in Bangladesh seeking a ban on ISKCON. On Friday, Indian Secular Front (ISF) leader and West Bengal MLA Nawsad Siddique condemned the recent arrest of Das and the recent petition to ban the organisation in Bangladesh. He said every minority in the world should be protected
