Delhi Could See Winter Chill Set In This Week As IMD Forecasts Minimum Temperature Below 20 °C

Delhi may see winter chills this week with minimum temperatures dropping to 16 degrees Celsius, while Mumbai anticipates above normal temperature.

With the advent of November, the residents may finally experience the winter chills, with the minimum temperature dropping to as low as 16 degrees Celsius, according to the forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department's regional centre. As per the predictions, the national capital is likely to see mainly clear sky over the week, with mist in the morning. 

A thick layer of haze blanketed Delhi on Friday morning, with the national capital's AQI plunging to 362 as people defied a citywide ban on firecrackers during Diwali celebrations. The national capital's minimum temperature was recorded 2.3 notches above normal at 18.4 degrees Celsius. Delhi also recorded its most polluted Diwali in three years. On Diwali on Thursday, the city's 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 330, compared to 218 in 2023 and 312 in 2022, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data.

Meanwhile, the country's financial capital Mumbai is likely to see light rain and thundershower towards the evening on Friday, but the sky is expected to remain clear on Saturday, with some haze in the morning, the Regional Met Centre Mumbai said in its forecast.  Mumbai, which has been sweltering under hot and humid conditions, recorded a maximum temperature of 36.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday — making it the state’s hottest city.

Mumbai's Forecast 

Amid Diwali festivities, Mumbai's air quality index (AQI) in Mumbai was recorded at 172 on Friday, according to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. However, several locations like Byculla, Kandivali West, and Sewri among others recorded AQI above 200, which falls into the 'Poor' category.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', 401 and 450 'severe' and above 450 'severe plus'.

As per the weather bureau, the temperatures in the city are expected to remain high, as above-normal temperatures are predicted for the first week of November. As per the IMD's latest forecast, Mumbai is likely to experience haze during morning hours today, and mainly clear sky later. "Maximum and minimum temperatures very likely to be around 36 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius respectively," it said.
