Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi gave her maiden speech in Lok Sabha on Friday cornering the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre over a host of issues including crime against women, Dalits, and minorities. The Wayanad MP addressed the House during a discussion on the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India.

She began her speech by highlighting the "glorious history of debate and discourse." "The Constitution gave people the right to justice.  People know that when they raise their voice, the government will have to bow before them," she said.

Terming the Constitution a "protective shield", she alleged the BJP-led government of making "all possible attempts to break their protective shield."

"The truth is that you keep on repeating 'Constitution, Constitution' because they got to know in these elections that the people of this country will keep the Constitution safe... as they won while nearing defeat, they got to know that the thought of changing the Constitution will not work...," she said.

The Congress leader attacked the government over lateral entry and privatisation, adding had the BJP won a sweeping mandate, "they would have also started working on changing the Constitution."

During her speech, she reiterated the Congress party's demand for a caste census.

Coming down on the BJP, she said an environment of fear has been made in the country for anyone who speaks the truth including leaders of the opposition, journalists, and the general public.

"People are intimidated and threatened for speaking truth," she said, adding: "Such environment of fear was during the British rule when people on this side (opposition) were fighting carrying the principles of Gandhi while people on that side (government's side) were working in cahoots with the British due to fear."

She further trained guns on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh saying India's Consitution is not Sangh's rulebook.

Ending a long wait, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made her way to the Lok Sabha after she won the Wayanad parliamentary constituency in the bypolls held last month. The byelections were necessitated after her brother and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi moved to the Raebareli seat.

She won the constituency with an even bigger margin than what Rahul won. Her final score stood at 4 lakh votes, more than her nearest rival and CPI veteran Sathyan Mokeri's tally of about 2 lakh votes.

Rahul had won the seat by a margin of over 3.65 lakh votes in the Lok Sabha elections held this year.
