An intoxicated man caught on surveillance trying car door handles in the Hillcrest area was arrested by Salmon Arm police, who say they later the man to found to be in violation of two probation orders.

On Oct. 15, Salmon Arm RCMP received a report from a man who said he had live surveillance footage of someone trying car door handles at 4:30 a.m.

Salmon Arm RCMP Const. Andrew Hodges said the suspect was described as a white man wearing blue jeans and white sneakers.

“Multiple police officers attended and located a 44-year-old man wearing matching clothing that was well known to police," Hodges said.

When RCMP officers approached the man, they found him to be intoxicated and promptly arrested him for being intoxicated in a public place.

A search of the man revealed he was carrying a knife, despite the man being under conditions not to possess any knives and to not handle any part of a motor vehicle.

The man was held in cells overnight to sober up before he was re-arrested for two counts of failing to comply with a probation order. The man was released from custody with a future court date to speak to the allegations.

Hodges confirmed police have forwarded charges to BC Prosecution Service for charge approval.

Last month, Salmon Arm RCMP warned residents of a rash of vehicle break-ins across the city and are encouraging residents to ensure their vehicles are locked and all valuables removed overnight.
