Plans have been unveiled to turn a former seniors care centre into a child care centre.

The building at 962 Laurier Avenue east of Ethel Street was once home to Harmony Living for Seniors, an assisted living facility that has since closed.

An application is now before City of Kelowna planners to convert the space into a child care centre with a capacity for 65 children.

Presently, the building includes nine bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, as well as a craft room, kitchen, dining and laundry rooms.

There is a caretaker suite on the second floor.

If the applicant is successful in getting the property rezoned to infill housing with a child care major, the main floor would be completely redesigned.

It would include four classrooms, seven washrooms including an accessible washroom as well as an outdoor play area.

The upper floor would remain unchanged.

The application will be circulated through various city hall departments before reaching the council table.
