The Nelson Police Department is excited to be hosting its first ever Youth Police Academy.

The classes will be held this November for youth aged 12-15 years.

This program will consist of four sessions conducted over the course of four weeks. The goal is to give interested students a chance to learn more about policing and foster relationships between the NPD and young people in the community.

The academy will offer a hands-on introduction to the world of law enforcement, featuring interactive activities, role-playing exercises, and informative discussions led by our officers.

Participants will explore key aspects of policing, such as use of force and conflict de-escalation, arrest, note-taking, communication, investigation, and decision-making.

  • Saturday, November 9, 2024: Introduction to the Nelson Police Department & Policing Fundamentals
  • Saturday, November 16, 2024: Traffic Stops, Safe Driving, and Arrest Procedures
  • Saturday, November 23, 2024: Conflict De-escalation, Use of Force, and Fingerprinting
  • Saturday, November 30, 2024: Bringing It All Together: Scenario-Based Training

There will be no cost to attend; however, spaces in the program are limited and will be assigned on a
first-come first-serve basis.

Anyone with an interest in law enforcement is encouraged to apply by Oct. 20, 2024.
