Five blooms and an award
by Luc Rempel · CastanetThe District of Sicamous has received full marks and a special award in this year’s Communities in Bloom competition.
Not only did the district receive a five-bloom rating in heritage, environment, and plant and floral displays, it also was awarded an Environmental Action Award.
The Communities in Bloom judges were in Sicamous in July to evaluate efforts from the local Communities in Bloom committee, local volunteers and district landscape workers.
This year, Sicamous focused on a theme of activating spaces to foster a healthy community environment.
Examples included in their submission were sustainability initiatives at the farmer’s market, health and wellness programs, heritage and art walking trails and a new staging area near the pickle ball courts.
"We will continue to partner with the District of Sicamous, local organizations and businesses on projects and programs that make Sicamous a better place to live," said Deb Heap, chair of Sicamous Communities in Bloom.
She said the judges were impressed with the cleanliness of Sicamous as well as environmentally friendly district efforts, like advocating for stronger invasive mussels prevention, the FoodCycler program and bioheat facility.
The District of Sicamous thanked the Sicamous Communities in Bloom organization and other community volunteers for their hard work in a statement on their website.
“The many hours invested by volunteers are appreciated and make a real difference in Sicamous!,” reads the statement.
The district’s full Communities in Bloom submission document is available to be read on the District of Sicamous website.
