A petition has been launched calling for the City of Vernon to create a new crosswalk honouring veterans.

The change.org petition launched by Kirk Rutledge is asking for the city’s approval and assistance creating a painted Veterans Memorial Crosswalk at the 31 Avenue bus loop crossing into Cenotaph Park.

“This effort is not just to make everyday pedestrian pathways more vibrant, but to create a bold, visual statement of our respect and immense gratitude towards our veterans,” reads the petition.

“Our community's ties to the military are deep-rooted, making a permanent memorial to honour those who have served not just fitting, but a necessity.”

The Greater Vernon area has a long military history with the Vernon Army Camp first starting to train army cadets over 70 years ago. Unexploded ordnances continue to be found throughout the area from past activity.

Rutledge says the crosswalk would symbolize the community’s dedication to honouring and remembering veterans year round.

City spokesperson Josh Winquist said the city installs and maintains special crosswalks, and there are no additional specialty crosswalk locations planned.

Winquist said he's not aware of any official petitions to create the veteran-specific crosswalk.

“Should an official petition be submitted, it will be reviewed through the appropriate channels,” said Winquist in an email.

More information about how to submit a petition to the city can be found online here.

The petition has reached 46 signatures so far.
