It was a tough break for one Chase resident when faulty brakes led to a cyclist colliding with a pedestrian — a crash that looked deliberate to at least one witness.

Chase Mounties were called to a report of an assault on Pine Street just before 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 8.

“A witness reported a cyclist crashed into an elderly man on purpose, knocking him to the ground,” said RCMP Const. Sarah Van Wilgenburg.

When police arrived they interviewed the victim, suspect and witness to get to the bottom of the matter.

“The cyclist advised she was hurrying to the store to purchase milk when her brakes failed,” Van Wilgenburg said. “She swerved to avoid the collision but accidentally clipped the pedestrian.”

The pedestrian was struck from behind and did not see what happened, he hit his head in the accident and suffered minor abrasions.

Paramedics assessed the victim and he required no further treatment.

When police tested the bicycle they confirmed the brakes did not function properly and there was no evidence to support the allegation the collision was deliberate.
