Police have said they are continuing to make inquiries following the arrested of a man on suspicion of attempted murder. Investigators have confirmed to PlymouthLive that man - described as a 29-year-old - handed himself into Charles Cross police station a short while after an alleged hit-and-run crash on Southside Street on the Barbican.

He was initially arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Officers had been called to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian in Southside Street at just after 2pm yesterday, Thursday, November 21.

It is understood that RNLI volunteers were among the first on hand and gave CPR to the injured man who suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision with a blue Audi S3. The full details of his injuries have not been released at this time.

Paramedics were also called to the scene before a road closure was put in place. The vehicle has been seized by police for examination after it was brought to the police station by the driver, who is from the Tavistock area.

Police have confirmed they have seized footage of the incident - which has already been shared widely on social media - as well as footage from a number of other premises along Southside Street to determine what led up to the collision.

In addition police have taken footage from the council's own CCTV system which has cameras in the area. The footage showing the actual incident itself at the Barbican where it joins the Pilgrim Way footpath, also shows a number of pedestrians in the area at the time.

Detectives have also stated the man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and the injured man, understood to have been the driver of an orange VW van, are not known to each other. The 29-year-old man remains in custody at Charles Cross police station at this time.

If you are able to help officers with their inquiries please get in touch with them via 101 or their website quoting log 476 of 21 November.
