Plymouth MP asks for assisted dying views ahead of parliamentary votepl
by Kirstie McCrum · PlymouthLiveA Plymouth MP is holding a survey of residents this month to help him decide on the upcoming assisted dying vote. On Friday, November 29, MPs will debate and vote on an assisted dying bill.
This is the first time since 2015 that MPs are considering the topic in Parliament. The Labour Party has said it will be a ‘free vote’, with the Party taking no official position and MPs free to vote as they choose.
Fred Thomas, MP for Plymouth Moor View, is asking residents to share their views on assisted dying by filling in his survey. He hopes these responses will give him a better understanding of the viewpoints he represents and shape his vote.
Fred has received over a hundred responses so far, with many residents sharing personal stories.
Fred Thomas, MP for Plymouth Moor View, said: "This is a deeply personal and emotive issue. I haven’t decided yet how I will vote, and I’m listening to arguments on both sides from the people I represent to help me decide. I want to make sure this matter gets the greatest amount of serious consideration, and that the right safeguards are in place.
"This is a big question and it’s important that we listen to one another with respect and, together, come up with the best answer.”
If you want to share your views with Fred, you can fill in his survey at: https://www.fredforplymouth.com/assisted-dying. Luke Pollard MP is running a similar public consultation for residents in Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, which can be accessed by clicking here.
Luke Pollard MP, Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, said: "I know that people have strong views on assisted dying on both sides of the debate, and I want to listen to as many residents as possible ahead of the vote in Parliament. If you have thoughts or experiences you would like to share, including on appropriate safeguards, please do get in touch with me."
The vote on November 29 will not change any laws, but rather is the first step of many to have the issue debated in Parliament. Future stages will provide the opportunity to change the Bill, with many MPs hoping to add more safeguards.
