Five arrested after man attacked near the Barbican
by Sarah Lumley, Molly Seaman · PlymouthLiveFive people were arrested in Plymouth yesterday evening (November 7) after reports of an assault near the Barbican. A large emergency services presence, including police and paramedics, was spotted at the scene along Vauxhall Street at around 7.30pm.
And police have now confirmed that five people were arrested at the scene and remain in police custody this morning (November 8), while one man was taken to Derriford Hospital to be treated for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.
A police spokesperson has also reassured the public that this incident is in no way linked to the fatal stabbing in Plymouth earlier this week. The spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called at 5.40pm on Thursday 7 November to Basket Ope, Plymouth, following reports of a group of men shouting and making threats towards each other.
"We received a further call from the ambulance service a short time later reporting that a man had been assaulted nearby. Officers attended and a scene guard was put in place.
"A man was taken to Derriford Hospital following the incident. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing."
Police went on to say that three people from Plymouth - two men aged 50 and 46, and a 27-year-old woman - have been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Meanwhile, a 37-year-old man from London has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and possession of a class A drug. And lastly, a 40-year-old man from Northern Ireland has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.
The police statement concluded: "All suspects remain in police custody at this time. This incident is not in any way linked to the fatal stabbing in Plymouth earlier this week."
South Western Ambulance Service also confirmed their attendance at the incident, with a spokesperson saying: "We were called at 17:39hrs on Thursday 07 November to an incident in Plymouth. We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, and an operations officer to the scene. We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Derriford Hospital."
