PMK to protest demanding implementation of 10.5% reservations for Vanniyars within MBC quota
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduPMK president Anbumani Ramadoss on Wednesday said the party would organise protests in all the district headquarters across the State to mark the 1,000 days of the Supreme Court ruling striking down the Vanniyar reservation passed by AIADMK regime. The party would demand the immediate implementation of the law that assures 10.5% reservations for Vanniyars in education and jobs within the (20%) Most Backward Classes quota.
In a statement, Dr. Anbumani said that Vanniyars are one of the most backward communities in Tamil Nadu and providing them internal reservations would only ensure social justice.
“But, the State government is making up reasons to deny the reservation for Vanniyars and it shows how much hate they have for Vanniyars. The members of the community too understand this,” he said.
Dr. Anbumani pointed out that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin assured the Assembly a few months after the Supreme Court verdict in the Vanniyar reservation issue that it would be implemented and he had further said that a special session would be called to pass the law regarding 10.5% reservation for Vanniyars within MBC quota.
“Now, he says that Vanniyar reservations cannot be given without conducting the caste census and argues that the State government doesn’t have the authority to conduct the census and only Centre can. That States have the right to conduct census according to Collection of Statistics Act, 2008, has been reiterated by High Courts of many States and also by the Supreme Court. Accordingly, Karnataka, Bihar, Odisha, Andhra and Telangana have conducted the census successfully. Yet, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin says that State doesn’t have the right. This shows that he either doesn’t understand social justice or is a pawn in the hands of forces who are against social justice,” he said.
