Talavadi farmers petition Chamarajnagar administration to repair roads, regulate traffic

by · The Hindu

Members of the Talavadi Farmers Association have called on the Chamarajanagar district administration in Karnataka to carry out repair work on four key roads that connect Tamil Nadu with Karnataka. They also requested regulation of traffic at the Punajanur check-post to ensure the smooth flow of exempted vehicles during the ongoing night travel ban.

Led by the association’s president S. Kannaiyan, the members submitted a petition to Shilpa Nag, Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar district, highlighting the hardships faced by residents of Talavadi taluk. The taluk, with a population of 70,000, of which 80% are Kannadigas, relies heavily on Chamarajnagar for trade, education and healthcare. The poor condition of the roads connecting Talavadi and Chamarajanagar has been causing immense hardship for motorists, emergency vehicles and essential transport services.

The roads in question include the Kumbaragundi-Gumtapuram, Ellakattai–Bommanahalli, Ethikatti–Yanagahalli, and Hosahalli–Arulavadi stretches, all of which are non-motorable and require urgent repair work, the petition said.

The petition also addressed issues arising from the night travel ban on the Karapallam to Bannari stretch of the Dindigul-Mysuru National Highway 948, as per the Madras High Court’s order dated April 6, 2022. While the ban is enforced between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., vehicles carrying farm products, emergency services, government vehicles, and local residents are exempt. However, congestion at the Punajanur check-post on the Karnataka side has caused delays for these exempted vehicles.

The petition urged the Karnataka administration to regulate traffic at the check-post to ensure the smooth and timely movement of exempted vehicles and to prioritise the urgent repair of the damaged roads.
