The incident happened on Monday afternoon when two women came as nurses and took away the baby of Ramakrishna and Kasturi, residents of Chittapur taluk, on the pretext of collecting blood samples.

Ramkrishna lodged a case on Monday evening, nearly four hours after the kidnapping. The Kalaburagi police formed three special teams and deployed 80 to 100 police personnel to trace the acussed. Besides the crime department officials, auto drivers were also roped in. The police got leads with the help of CCTV camera footage and eyewitnesses.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused confessed that they had kidnapped the newborn to sell him for ₹50,000 to a childless couple. They had received ₹25,000 in advance. It was clear negligence on the part of the authorities at GIMS hospital, as they neither lodged a complaint nor informed the police about the incident.
