Two days after setting up three committees to streamline discipline within the party, the Trinamool Congress on Wednesday (November 27, 2024) decided to issue a show cause to its Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir.

Mr. Kabir has targeted senior TMC leaders Firhad Hakim and Kalyan Banerjee and reiterated his stand that party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee should be given key organisational positions. The Trinamool leader from Murshidabad has been making such statements for the past few months, much to the embarrassment of party leadership.

A meeting of the TMC disciplinary committee was held in the State Assembly on Wednesday (November 27, 2024) where it was decided to issue a show cause to the MLA. Mr. Kabir said that he would stick to his stand but would reply to the show cause notice.

Detractors left in the cold

Over the past few months, the TMC has been facing a situation of leaders speaking in different voices. The party recently inducted five more members into its national executive committee. Party elders loyal to party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have been given prominence in the organisational changes.

The national executive committee did not invite Sukhendu Sekhar Roy to attend its meeting. Mr. Roy had been critical to the ruling party’s policies during the protests against the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The TMC has also left its former Rajya Sabha MP Shantanu Sen in the cold, with the State government recently withdrawing his security. Mr. Sen had criticised the developments at the R.G. Kar MCH and accused a section of the West Bengal Health Department of corruption.
