The Kumbabhishekam of the Chola-era Gangadeeswarar temple in Purasawalkam here was held on Thursday with thousands of devotees attending the event. A total of 36 works for a total of ₹4.82 crore were taken up to restore and renovate the temple. Of this, ₹2.82 crore was from the temple’s own funds, with which 14 works were carried out. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) had renovated the tank.

Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments P.K. Sekarbabu, who attended the event, along with Madras High Court Judge Bhavani Subbarayan, said the temple’s last Kumbabhishekam was in 2008. “Work to construct a new golden chariot for the temple at ₹6 crore has been taken up. Its wooden base is now ready. Similarly, a wooden chariot is also ready,” he said.
